The Macedonian Call
by William F. Sherbert
"The Macedonian call still sounds
"Come help us," hear them say.
"Our souls are groping in the night,
We need the light of day."
Oh, may we be like Paul of old
And go as he did go.
May we be faithful to the task
And his great courage know.
Men still are dying in the dark
Without a trace of light.
Dear Christian, take the Light to them,
Dispel the gloom of night.
Just as the Macedonian call
Came loud and clear that day,
The call still comes to you and me
To go and preach and pray.
Can you not hear the call my friend?
It comes from hearts oppressed.
They're burdened down by sin and guilt,
Their souls are sore distressed.
They're calling for the help they need,
"Come over," hear them say,
"We need the help that you can give,
Come show to us the Way"
Oh, let it never then be said,
You disobeyed the call
By failing to obey His voice;
Give Him your all in all.
You may not feel that you can preach,
But you can surely pray.
And you can give that others can
Show them the Truth, the Way."
Twas The Night Before Jesus Came
By unknown author
"Twas the night before Jesus came and all through the house
Not a creature was praying, not one in tne house
Their Bibles were laid on the shelf without care
In hopes that Jesus would not come there.
The children were dressing to crawl into bed,
Not one ever kneeling or bowing a head.
And Mom in her rocker with the babe on her lap
Was watching the late show while I took a nap.
When out of the East there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash!
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But angels proclaiming that Jesus was here.
With a light like the sun sending forth a bright
I knew in a moment this must be THE DAY!
The light of His face made me cover my head
It was Jesus, returning, just as He said.
And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth,
I cried when I saw Him, in spite of myself.
In the Book of Life which He held in His hand
Was written the name of every saved man.
He spoke not a word as He searched for my name,
When He said, "It's not here," my head hung in shame.
The people whose names had been written with love
He gathered to take to His Father above.
With those who were ready He arose without a sound,
While all of the rest were left standing around.
I fell to my knees, but it was too late;
I had waited too long and thus sealed my fate.
I stood and cried as they rose out of sight,
Oh, if only we all had been ready tonight.
In the words of this poem, the meaning is clear,
The coming of Jesus is drawing near.
There's only one life and when comes the last call
We'll find that the BIBLE was true after all!"

My Kingdom
By Mary Ricketts
"I am queen of a beautiful kingdom
God gave it to me for my own,
My castle is a rambling old farmhouse,
And a low rocking chair, my throne.
My subjects are dear little children
Who willingly come at my call,
The King, is husband and father
Who furnished bread for us all.
Sometimes when I mend little stockings,
Or hear a short prayer at my knee,
I marvel that God in His wisdom
Presented this kingdom to me.
I often feel weak and unworthy
To guide little footsteps that roam,
To keep them all safe and contented,
In our beautiful kingdom of HOME."

The Bible Friend, the newsletter of Osterhus Pub. House, December 1986

Waiting
By Theresa V. Meyer
"I watch from my window day after day,
For someone may come to my door and say,
"I was just passing by on my way to the store,
I really meant to have called before."
"Oh, do come in and sit awhile!"
"Yes," she answers with a friendly smile.
"Perhaps a warm drink and a little chat?
Won't you sit down? I'll take your hat."
I set the tray with special care,
Then tidy my apron and smooth my hair.
"What you've done to this house is such a delight.
And the flowers in your garden are a lovely sight!"
She sips her drink and smiles at me,
As warm and friendly as she can be.
We talk for awhile, then she has to leave.
I feel the urge to tug at her sleeve.
"Perhaps you could stay a wee bit more?"
But smiling, she makes her way to the door.
"Thank you for coming, now do take care!"
Then I set the tray down by the empty chair.
I watch from my window and hear myself say,
"Perhaps that will really happen today!"

THE JOY OF UNSELFISH GIVING
By Helen Steiner Rice
"Time is not measured by the years that you live,
But by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give—
And each day, as it comes, brings a chance to each one
To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone
That would brighten the life or lighten the load
Of some weary traveler, lost on life's road ...
So what does it matter how long we may live,
If as long as we live we unselfishly give?"

The Bible Friend, the newsletter of Osterhus Pub. House, December 1986
God's Best Gift
By Martha Snell Nicholson
"This world was poor and sinful, lost;
But God was rich, and full of grace.
And He looked down on Bethlehem town
And said, Star, shine above this place;
And angels, gird it round with praise.
Let heaven's gate be left ajar
Till heaven's glory lights the earth;
Let wise men travel from afar
With gold and frankincense and myrrh,
To see what gift I gave this day
To man...The very heart of Me
Lies strangely cradled in the hay!
"For heaven is a lonely place
Without the presence of My Son,
His empty ivory palaces
Wait His return, My Holy One.
But, if He be lifted up,
Shall draw all men through Him, to Me,
And He, when He has drained His cup,
Shall bring salvation full and free
To all who call upon His name.
Thanks be to God this Christmas Day,
To God, Who loved us so He gave
His Son to take our sins away!"

Beautiful Snow
By Unknown Author
"Once I was pure as the snow— but I fell,
Fell like the snow, but from heaven to hell,
Fell to be trampled as filth on the street,
Fell to be spit on, scoffed at, and beat,
Pleading and cursing and begging to die,
Selling my soul to whoever would buy,
Dealing in sin for a morsel of bread,
Hating the living and fearing the dead,
My God, can it be I have fallen so low?
And yet I was once like the beautiful snow."

Christmas By The Cupful
By Allene Mills
"A heaping cup of happiness
2 of love and caring,
1 of understanding,
1 of joyful sharing.
A level cup of wisdom,
1 of artful living,
1 of thoughtful insight,
1 of selfless giving.
Mix ingredients together,
Toss in a little flair,
Serve to everyone you know,
Topped with a tiny prayer.
May every measure of happiness
Be yours this Christmas time!
May we use this recipe often, not only at Christmas, but all during the year."

God Bless You
by unknown author
"The Lord bless thee and keep thee, The Lord make his face shine upon thee, And be gracious unto thee"
(Numbers 6:24-25).
I seek in pray'ful words, dear friend,
My heart's true wish to send you;
That you may know that, far or near,
My loving thoughts attend you.
I cannot find a truer word,
Nor fonder, to address you;
Nor song, nor poem that I have heard
Is sweeter than— "God bless you!"
God bless you! So I've wished you all
Of brightness life possesses;
For can there any joy at all
Be yours unless God blesses?
God bless you! So I breathe a charm,
Lest grief's dark night oppress you;
For how can sorrow bring you harm,
If 'tis God's way to bless you?
And so, "through all thy days
May shadows touch you never";
But this olone—God bless you good—
Then you have joy forever."

I Needed To Rest
By Lester L. Buttram
"I needed to rest,
So He took me aside
Into quiet places,
Where we could confide.
Drawn from life's toil
Where all the day long
I rushed and I worked,
When well and strong.
Yes, I needed to rest
Tho first I did whine
But so gently He took
This burden of mine
And lovingly whispered
Of many precious things.
So worn in my body
Now my heart sings
Of glorious promises,
I never knew
His love is so real,
Ever faithful and true.
0, I needed to rest,
Now no reason to chide,
I yet must draw closer
In Him to abide.
Let the storms and the waves,
As round me they roll.
In the cleft of the Rock,
He's anchored my soul.

A Little One's Following Us
By Melicent Margaret Trimble
"Two little feet to follow us,
Where e're our feet may trod,
Will they lead to folly's door,
Or will they lead to God?
Two little eyes to observe what we do,
To copy our ways and our tastes,
Will they help build a growing world,
Or will they add to the waste?
Two little ears to hear what we say,
In pleasure - in suffering - in prayer,
Will it give courage and peace on the way,
Or multiply hatred and care?
One little mind but two little lips,
To share our thoughts and words,
Will they be envious, selfish and proud,
Or will they breed faith in our Lord?
One little heart but two little arms,
Embracing those he loves,
Tenderly Jesus, help us to direct
His affection to God above.
Daddy and Mommy - they're magical words,
Secure in loving trust,
God grant us the grace to follow YOU Lord,
For A LITTLE ONE'S FOLLOWING US!"

Just In Case
By unknown author
"If I knew that tomorrow there would be
No dawn on earth for me;
That I should have gone in the dark of night
Into eternity -
I should do so many things
For those I love,
But, oh, I should be happy, too,
With those above!
So- just in case I might be viewing
Morning in celestial skies,
Lord bring me those who need my love today,
For, otherwise,
The night may close a door
On words I meant to say,
And morning find my empty house-
With me away."

Gospel Tract Harvester Newsletter, July-August 1986, page 10
All Is Well
By Peggy Hoffer
"It was at the foot of the cross
I knelt the other day.
The Savior reached down His hand
and washed my sins away.
He said, "Have faith my child,
my blood was shed for you.
I died upon the cross
to give you life anew.
I rose up from the grave;
I conquered death and hell.
I have the keys of the kingdom,
and I tell you, "All is well."
I hold the power
to keep your soul from hell.
Look unto me my child,
for I tell you, "All is well."
Don't look left or right,
don*t look back or down,
for I am your strength
when the devil comes around.
He is a conquered foe,
he knows this very well.
He just tries to test you
to see if "All is well."
But look to me my child
Look full into my face,
for I will give you mercy
and all the strength and grace.
Though trials will befall you,
I'm always here my child,
to draw you to my bosom
and hold you all the while.
I love you, oh my child,
as tongues can never tell.
Just look to me for mercy,
to keep your soul from hell."

If We Could See Beyond Today
By Norman J. Clayton
"If we could see beyond today
As God can see,
If all the clouds should roll away,
The shadows flee;
O'er present griefs we would not fret,
Each sorrow we would soon forget.
For many joys are waiting yet
For you and me.
If we could know beyond today
As God doth know,
Why dearest treasures pass away,
And tears must flow;
And why the darkness leads to light,
Why dreary days will soon grow bright,
Some day life's wrong will be made right
Faith tells us so.
If we could see, if we could know
We often say,
But God in love a veil doth throw
Across our way.
We cannot see what lies before,
And so we cling to Him the more,
He leads us till this life is o'er,
Trust and obey."

Gospel Tract Harvester, February 1987, page 2

Whatever The Care By David Buttram
"Whatever the care
That breaks thy rest
Whatever the wish
That swells thy breast
Spread before God
That wish, that care,
And change thy anxiety
To prayer."
Needy By David Buttram
"I have more food than I can eat,
Others die of hunger on the street;
I have more clothes than I can wear,
Their feet and legs and arms are bare.
My walls are thick, warm and dry,
Their walls are wind, rain, and sky;
I have the love of noble souls
Their lot is cold and empty bowls.
O Lord, I would remember them
When needy cries rise again."

We Sing to Thee, Emmanuel
By Paul Gerhardt
"We sing to Thee, Emmanuel,
The Prince of Life, salvation's Well,
The Plant of heaven, the Star of morn,
The Lord of hosts, the Virgin-Born.
All glory, worship, thanks, and praise
That Thou art come in these our days!
Thou heavenly Guest, expected long,
We hail Thee with a joyful song."

His Ways
By Roy Lessin
"His ways are good-
They will be joy to you.
His ways are right-
They will be wisdom to you.
His ways are pure-
They will be refreshment to you.
His ways are sure-
They will be strength to you.
His ways are best-
They will be blessings to you."
Without Him
By Frances Ridley Havergal
"I could not do without Him,
For Jesus means to me
More than all the richest gifts
Of earth could ever, ever be.
The more I find Him precious,
And the more I find Him true,
The more I long for you to find
What He will do for you.
What will you do without Him
In the long and dreary day
Of trouble and perplexity,
When you can't find the way?
When no one else can help you,
And no one guides you right,
When hope comes not with morning,
And rest comes not with night?
What will you do without Him
When death is drawing near,
Without His love, the only love,
That casts out every fear?
When the shadow valley opens
Unlighted and unknown,
And the terror of its darkness
Must all be passed alone?
Why will you do without Him?
There is no other Name
By which you can be saved,
No hope, no way, no claim.
Without Him- everlasting loss
Of love and light and life.
Without Him- everlasting woe
And everlasting night.
You need not be without Him!
For He is passing by.
He is waiting to be gracious,
Only waiting for your cry!
He is waiting to receive you,
To make you all His own.
Why will you do without Him
And wander on alone?
But with Him! Oh, with Jesus!
Are any words so blest?
With Jesus - everlasting joy,
And everlasting rest.
With Jesus- empty hearts are filled
With His perfect love.
With Jesus- perfect peace below,
And perfect bliss above."

Two Followers
By Olive Bender
"Goodness and mercy- how can it be
That always and ever they follow me?
Day after day and year after year,
The tread of their footsteps sounding near.
I, so unworthy so poor and bereft;
Yet my two followers never have left.
Oft times I've wandered far out in the cold,
Quickly they've ushered me back to the fold;
Guiding me safe when my feet touched the brink,
Lifting me up when it seemed I would sink.
How could I merit this kind, loving care?
No good have I- but a secret I'll share,
The Lord is my Shepherd who watches to see
That goodness and mercy are following me."

Remembering and Forgetting
By David Buttram
"Forget each kindness that you do
as soon as you have done it;
Forget the praise that falls to you
the moment you have won it.
Forget the slander that you hear
before you can repeat it;
Forget each slight, each spite, each sneer,
wherever you may meet it.
Remember every kindness done
whatever be its measure;
Remember praise by others won,
and pass it on with pleasure.
Remember every promise made
and keep it to the letter;
Remember those who lend you aid,
and be a grateful debtor.
Remember all the happiness
that comes your way in living;
Forget each worry and distress,
be hopeful and forgiving.
Remember good, remember truth,
remember Heaven above you;
And you will find through age and youth,
that many hearts will love you."

All I Need
By Shawn McDonald
"As I sit here and think
About all that You've done
About how You gave me Your one and only Son
And I'm trying to fathom
All that You are, but so far, Lord
You're so beyond me
I fall down in reverence
And I fall down in fear
And I'm asking You, Lord, won't You please draw near
Won't You open my eyes
So that I can see
The way that You are working in me
All I need is Your love
To come and fill this heart of mine
My heart is a desert that has gone dry
And I need Your love to get me by, by, by, by, by
To get me by, by, by, by, by
To get me by
And I lay down my life
And I put it before You
All that I am is in Your hands
And I'm not going to question, why You're so faithful
Why that You give me the blessing that You have
Let the glory be known, let the glory be shown
Lift You up unto the throne
You are my God, You are my King
To You I give, I give You everything
All that I need is Your love, my God"

What If
By Jadon Lavik
"What if I climbed that mountain
What if I swam to that shore
What if every battle was victorious
Then would You love me more
Would You love me more
What if I were everyone's first choice
What if I went farther than before
What if I stood high above the rest
Then would You love me more
Would You love me more
You say I belong to You
Apart from the things I do
You say I belong to You
I'm in awe of why You do
Why You do, why You do, I'm in awe of You, ooh
What if I ignored the hand that fed me
What if I forgot to confess
What if I stumbled down that mountain
Then would You love me less
Lord would You love me less
What if I were everyone's last choice
What if I mixed in with the rest
What if I failed what I passed before
then would You love me less
Lord would You would You love me less, oh no oh no oh no
You say I belong to You
Apart from the things I do
You say I belong to You
I'm in awe of why You do You do You do You do
What have I done
To deserve your Son
Sent to die for me
What can I give
I want to live
Give me eyes to see
In a world that keeps changin'
There's one thing
That I know is true
Your love is stayin'
There's nothing else
I'll hold onto
You say I belong to You
Apart from the things I do
You say I belong to You
I'm in awe of why You do Why You do
You say I belong to You
Apart from the things I do
You say I belong to You
I'm in awe of why You do
I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You
The way You love me,
The way You do
The way You do
The way You love me, You love me, You love me
The way You do the way You do

Our fathers' God, to Thee

With freedom's Holy Light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King!"
A True Story!
by Lenard Elbert Griffis, Senior
"I have a story to tell you; it is a true one this I know;
It all happened as I recall it now, many years ago,
My story begins with a little lad, as he sits in church one day,
His heart was moved with conviction, as he heard the preacher say,
"My friend you must be born again, if Heaven is to be your home,
Jesus is the light of the world; you need not in darkness roam."
It seemed everything the preacher said was meant for him alone,
His heart was near to bursting, and his spirit was made to groan.
He said, "I must ask Jesus to forgive me of all my sin,
He will make my heart as white as snow; on Him I can depend,"
When on the scene stalks the villain, and he whispers in his ear,
"You are too young, you have lots of time; there is no need to fear."
"Leave right now; go into the world and live a life of glee;
Wait until you are older, and had your fun, then to God you can flee,"
Now the lad gave in to him, for it seemed that he was right,
Satan won that first round; for the lad was too young to fight.
Year went on after year, while he had Satan for his guide,
But from those tender, pleading eyes of Jesus, there was no place to hide;
Jesus pleaded with him so tenderly to turn from sin and shame,
He asked him to kneel at the cross, and go witness for His name.
Now Satan lost no time, but back to his shoulder did fly,
He said, "tell Jesus you will be a Christian in the sweet by and by;
But just now there are so many things for you to see and try."
The time had come, he must choose one or the other,
It should be Jesus, as he remembers the prayers of his mother,
If he chose Satan, he was sure to be the loser,
If he chose Jesus, he was sure to be the winner.
He fell upon his knees and prayed, "Lord be merciful to me a sinner,"
The joy that came into his heart, the half cannot be told,
As Jesus so tenderly took him, so gently into the fold.
When I tell you how I know this story is true, I am sure you will agree,
For this little lad, you see, was no one else but me..."
