Introduction

Oprah did some New Age shows. But is she New Age now? Can we trust her? Read this web page and draw your own conclusions...

On Sunday morning, March 30, 2008, the Lord started dealing with me in the Spirit. He impressed upon me that there was a lot of confusion going on and that I was to minister in this area. I was not expecting this and I started scratching my head as to just exactly what the Lord had in mind because what He told me was kind of general. But then me and my wife went to Church and one of our pastor's preached on the same topic. He was talking about the Gospel According to Oprah- how confusing it is for folks who label themselves as "Christians"- who are supposed to be obedient to Jesus Christ and His Word- to go around teaching the doctrines of devils. So this is what lead me to pen this document in the hopes I could reach someone who was confused, or about to turn away from Christ, or to reach someone who had already done so to bring them back.

Oprah has been a blessing to many people and has helped many people in many ways. She has been generous on many fronts. But Oprah's television show has changed. She has ventured from self-help into the religious area- especially an anti-Christian area. And true Christians do not appreciate it. I hope she gets back into the self help area again very soon and then stays there and doesn't ever venture into the religious area again. I don't know who is to blame for her doing this. Maybe she has some writers, friends, or bad advisers who are anti-Christian- who are leading her down this dangerous pathway.

As far as Christian false doctrine is concerned- anytime a person, an idea, a thought, or a philosophy comes along that involves spirituality it should be immediately suspect. When Christians suspect anything- then we have to investigate it to see if it is true or if it is false. Remember the rule: all truth is subject to verification. We know that God and His word, the Bible, are true and they have been verified. All we have to do is to measure the idea, thought, or philosophy against the Bible for comparison. If it lines up then we have a further extention of truth. If it does not line up then we have error or false teaching. It's that simple.

Before we go any farther let's take a brief look at the New Age Movement.

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian
any more than going to MacDonald's makes you a hamburger

The New Age Movement

New Age is the name of a certain philosophy. What does this philosophy teach? To answer that, let me ask you a question. Would you consider calling yourself a god, or would you consider the idea that your inner-self is God? This is just one of the many false teachings that New Age embraces. And because this teaching contradicts the Holy Bible it is labelled a cult.

"The New Age movement is generally a collection of Eastern-influenced metaphysical thought systems, a conglomeration of theologies, hopes, and expectations held together with an eclectic teaching of salvation, of "correct thinking," and "correct knowledge." It is a theology of "feel-goodism," "universal tolerance," and "moral relativism."
This info quoted from the web. Web address is http://www.carm.org/nam/nawhatis.htm

Much of New Age teaching comes wrapped in a spiritual blanket. That means it runs a close counterfeit to the spirituality of the Bible.
Another Jesus is offered,
the teachings of Jesus are mentioned,
free thought is promoted,
no sin, condemnation, or accountability is required,
another way of salvation is offered, etc.

Some New Age teachings are in direct violation of the Word of God (the Bible):

1. There is no such thing as sin. It is an illusion.

2. Everything is god and god is good. Therefore there is no sin, disease, or death because all is god and god is good. The whole universe is falsehood- an illusion.
Response:
The New Age god is not the personal God of the Bible.

3. The Blood of Jesus has no atoning value and since sin is an illusion we are not guilty.

4. Salvation is deliverance from delusion.

5. Jesus was never tempted by the devil. He was just tempted by the false beliefs in His own mind.

6. The blood of Christ does not forgive sins, it gives us a "chance" to live again.
Response:
They have NO assurance of salvation as those who know the truth. (The Bible says the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. Common sense question- Why would God send His Son to die if there was another way to be saved?)

Here is a post on Oprah's message board from a Christian:

"It is time to awaken: A Post For You Who Are Being Deceived
There is a hymn that Oprah may have even sung at some point. It quotes the Psalmist and part of the lyrics goes:
"Awake my soul and sing! Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King Through all eternity."
There does need to be an "awakening" on this planet, no doubt. Folks, this Tolle book is very deceptive: it quotes Jesus but omits His Deity. There are many, many untruths and counterfeits of the Truth in this book. You know, if someone feeds you a pan of brownies and someone comes along and says, "Watch out: those aren't really pure brownies: there is a bunch of manure in them!!! Don't eat them!!!" Hopefully, you might take heed. Or, maybe you'll just keep on eating those crapalicious brownies and say, "Is that so?" or "You either get it or you don't." But, at least some folks tried to warn you that you were eating manure!"

One has to be careful not to buy into what the New Age is selling. The price tag is quite high. If you are not careful it might cost you your soul.

If you are into the New Age movement don't think of yourself as divine. King Herod did in Bible times and this is what happened to Him:

"...Herod put on his royal robes, sat on his throne, and made a speech to them. The people gave him a great ovation, shouting, "It is the voice of a god, not of a man!" Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people's worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died"
(Acts 12:21-23).

What Does The Bible Say?

I think we can learn a lot from the Temptation (or Testing) of Jesus Christ. Is it relevant to this New Age teaching? You bet!

Let's study the testing of Jesus Christ by the devil. Why? Because all testing is similar. The way Satan tested Christ may be the way the he tests you and I. It will help each of us to know what Satan may throw at us. Satan did not test Christ's deity. Satan tested Christ's humanity. Satan thought that Christ's humanity (or flesh) was His weak point. Prior to this time Satan had tested humans (for thousands of years) to sin against God due to the weakness of their flesh. And, unfortunately, he had been somewhat successful with this strategy.

"For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure (lust of the flesh), the lust for everything we see (lust of the eye), and pride in our possessions (pride of life). These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world"
(I John 2:16).

The bible states that Jesus Christ was tempted in all points like we are

"This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin"
(Hebrews 4:15).

Human temptations are divided into three areas:
1. the lust of the flesh
2. the lust of the eye
3. the pride of life

Satan also used these 3 areas of temptation on Adam and Eve and he was successful. Why shouldn't he try these 3 also on Jesus? Why shouldn't he try these on you and I? Satan's strategy is to derail you and I from our relationship with God. Let's look at these temptations:

In regards to the lust of the flesh: {my (Kraig Rice) paraphrase}

Satan told Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of good and evil. It would be pleasurable to eat the fruit.
Satan told Jesus to turn the stones into bread to eat. It would be pleasurable to eat the bread.

In the first temptation Satan tempted Jesus with his true personality. Jesus used the Word of God, His dependence and faith on His father, and He used the power of the Holy Spirit to defeat Satan. The fulness of the Holy Spirit yields power to help you overcome temptation. Satan appealed to Christ as a man. Satan used His hunger for food as a temptation. Be independent- take your own initiative to satisfy your needs and wants. It's sin to act independent of God. Christ did nothing apart from the will of His father. The physical shall not dominate is the answer that Christ gave to Satan.

My note:
God wants each of His children to carry a cross of self denial. If you go into a candy shop and eat everything that is there then you are going to get sick. Unbridled physical pleasure outside of God's boundaries can be fatal. For instance, adultery is called the blood sin because, many times, it leads to someone getting killed. Unbridled sex may lead one to getting AIDS, etc. Satan keeps on tempting everyone to sin.

In regards to the lust of the eye: (my paraphrase)
Satan told Eve: the forbidden fruit looks so delicious. It tastes as good as it looks. You want it. You have to have it. It will be good for you. Go ahead and take a little bite and see for yourself. And when you do your eyes will be opened which will also be good for you. Take a second look. It even looks better the second time, doesn't it!
Satan told Jesus: look at all of the money, sex, power, and fame that is in the evil world system. You can have it all. Look at the glitter of sparkling diamonds and the yellow color of all of that gold. I will give it all to You if you fall down and worship me.

In this temptation the devil was trying to get Jesus away from the pathway of perfect service. The devil is the prince of this world. Service is linked to worship. Satan thinks that every person has a price at which they can be bought. He can offer money, sex, power, and fame to get a person to serve and worship him.

My note:
Things don't always taste as good as they look. Some rowdy teenagers went into a restaurant one time and dumped the contents of the salt shaker into the sugar bowl. That sugar looked good and sweet. But the next customer, which happened to be me, put 3 tea spoons of it into my cup of coffee and it was ruined rather than enhanced.

If you are a fisherman you want to use a glittery lure to attract the fish. It looks so good to the hungry fish. But the lure does not taste as good as it looks-

What is lust? One description of lust is when a person takes the second look. There is a true and tragic story in the Bible that emphasizes my point. This story starts off this way: "David's son Absalom had a beautiful sister named Tamar. And Amnon, her half brother, fell desperately in love with her. Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible that he could ever fulfill his love for her."

Amnon lusted after his half sister. He took the second look. After he raped her the fruit of the victory did not taste as good as it had looked. Guilt can do that. "Then suddenly Amnon's love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. "Get out of here!" he snarled at her.

The story had a tragic ending. "So at Absalom's signal they murdered Amnon."
(2 Samuel Chapter One). Temptations must be resisted like our Lord Jesus Christ showed us to do no matter how good they may appear.

In regards to the pride of life: (my paraphrase)
Satan told Eve: You shall be as gods. Trust in yourself without God's help. Be your own god. Be self sufficient. You don't need God. Owning deity is one's greatest possession and goal. If man cannot become God then he does the next best thing: he makes himself into a god with self worship. This was Satan's goal and he achieved self worship through his pride on his own without God's help.
Satan told Jesus: Go ahead and throw yourself down. You won't die. A god cannot die. Trust in yourself without God's help. Be self sufficient. Only pride in Himself would have made Jesus throw Himself down. But that was Satan's sin. Instead, Jesus was humble. Jesus did not trust in Himself to do His own will but His father's will. Christ is God but He didn't have to prove it to Satan for this test.

In this temptation Satan tried to undermine Christ's trust and confidence in God. The high pinnacle shows pride. Each of us should beware of pride that would lead us down the wrong pathway. To test God in this manner would be to show a lack of trust in God. Trust abides in confidence.

My note:
We should always recognize our dependence on God. We should strive to be like Him but not to replace Him.

There are a lot of voices in the world today. There is a lot of false teaching. Do you know how government workers spot counterfeit paper money? They are trained to study the genuine. Once you know what is genuine it is relative easy to spot the counterfeit. So, if we study the genuine truth and doctrine contained in the Bible, we should be able to spot counterfeit teaching when we are presented with it.

HOW ARE YOU TO KNOW WHEN A FALSE TEACHER COMES TO YOU?

Here is a test you can use on any religious people who come to you- with their teachings seeking you as a member of their group. Many false teachers will be very sincere. They actually believe what they are telling you is true. They may even have tears in their eyes. But sincerity is no test for truth. They may be sincerely wrong if what they are trying to teach you contradicts the truths of the Bible. Do not believe them. The Bible says to "test the spirits"- this is found written in the Bible in
I John 2:22 and I John 4: 1- 6.

God inspired the writing of the Bible and He knew it was important enough to mention it twice. Give the people in question a test. The results of this test (which consist of two questions) will tell you if the people are sent by God or by Satan.

The first test question to ask the suspected false teacher is this:
Has Jesus Christ come in the flesh? Or another way of putting it is this way:
Is Jesus Christ God? or Is Jesus Christ the only divine Son of God?

The second test question to ask the suspected false teacher is this:
Is Jesus Christ the only way by which a person can receive salvation by faith alone and make it to Heaven?

Analyze carefully the smooth replies to these questions and when you learn the answer is NO to either one or both of the questions, you will know that person is a false teacher sent from Satan to deceive you.

Here is a brief analysis of the above test questions. The Bible abounds with proof that Jesus Christ is God. Here are a few scriptures:
John 13:20, 20:28; Matthew 1:23, 14:27 (Exodus 3:14). At the trial of Jesus He was asked if He was the divine Christ. He could have denied He was divine and saved His life. But He admitted He was God and went to the cross to save you and me from the penalty of our sins. The Bible narrative goes this way in
Mark 14: 61 & 62,
"...the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said,
"I am."

Satan is known as the usurper because he claims Christ's place. Satan is the god of the universe and consequently, will never admit that Jesus Christ is God. False teachings springing through people from Satan will always acknowledge this.

Satan wants worship and he wants it his way, but Jesus is the only way to God and the only way to salvation. Satan had his head bruised (the head of a snake) by Christ on the cross and through the resurrection one can see that Jesus Christ is still alive.

However, Satan in his attempt to build himself up must put Christ down and discredit Him. If you are Christ's follower Satan will try to discredit you also. Satan denies that Christ is the only way to Heaven. So Satan gives the counterfeit way of salvation based upon man's sin-tainted and fleshly and self righteous works. This counterfeit will not forgive you of your sins and it will not take you to Heaven.

Satan hates Christ's blood. It is Christ's blood on the cross that defeated him because without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. Satan's counterfeit way of salvation is always without the shed blood of Jesus Christ, the divine Son of God.

Some false teachers claim that Jesus is only one way among other ways to get to Heaven. They offer a false way to God and a false substitute for Christ. Their Jesus is not our Jesus. Here are a few scripture references that prove that Jesus Christ is the only way by which a person can make it to Heaven:
John 14:6, 7:9, 10:14; Ephesians 4:5.
If you are already in one of the false religious groups that teach contrary to the above Bible truths then God is dealing with you to get out of it and showing you that you have been deceived. I suggest you get out of it fast and break off all fellowship with those who are in it. Your eternal soul is in danger of hellfire,

"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."
(Galatians 1:8)

False religions and cults demand a great deal from their slave followers. The slaves obtain their "salvation" by working for it (called works) because Satan is a taker, and fear is always involved in these groups because fear is Satan's tool. Faith is the opposite of fear. The Bible says that true salvation is a free gift from God...
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast"
(Ephesians 2: 8 & 9).

God is a giver and God's way is the way of faith, not fear.
(Romans 1:17)

Satan's angels are disguised as angels of light,
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works"
(2 Corinthians 11: 14 & 15).

God does not believe in atheists
therefore atheists do not exist

The Secret- The Law of Attraction

"The Secret" came out on a DVD in 2007 as a motivational, self help film instructing one on how to think positively. Anyone can use this method and be successful. So, what's the problem?

The problem is that "The Secret" is a New Age film wrapped in a spiritual blanket. The author, Rhonda Byrne, teaches that God is in all of creation, including all human beings, and once a person becomes aware of this, there are no limits to what he or she can achieve. We all have a divine essence within us and we just need to get in touch with it. That's right- you are a god.

Rhonda Byrne, the author of The Secret, is a disciple of a couple named Jerry and Esther Hicks. In the Acknowledgements of The Secret, Byrne thanked the Hicks and the teachings of Abraham. Abraham is a group of spirit guides that Esther Hicks channels for guidance on spiritual issues...

The Secret is a New Age film so be careful you don't get deceived by it.

Here is what Robert Velarde had to say about it:

"You hold in your hands a Great Secret," reads the dust jacket for the bestselling book The Secret (Simon & Schuster—Atria Books/Beyond Words, 2006). The intriguing text continues, "This centuries old Secret has been understood by some of the most prominent people in history...Now The Secret is being revealed to the world." Within its pages author Rhonda Byrne reveals her ambitious purpose: "My intention in creating The Secret was— and still is— that it will bring joy to billions around the world" (xi).

Although Byrne still has a lot of ground to cover before reaching billions, record-breaking sales of The Secret, spurred by promotion by Oprah Winfrey and via other media venues, have resulted in the latest self-help phenomenon. A companion to the popular direct-to-DVD film of the same title, The Secret features more than two dozen individuals including New Age authors Jack Canfield and Neale Donald Walsch. The book makes some amazing claims, touching upon finances, relationships, health, and more.

But what is The Secret all about? A closer look reveals answers that are anything but new or secret. At its core, The Secret emphasizes the "law of attraction," a principle it claims is supported throughout the centuries by such luminaries as Buddha, Plato, Jesus, Beethoven, Charles Fillmore (the founder of Unity, a mind science religion), Einstein, and many other "great avatars and master teachers from the past," as well as various religions including Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Simply put, the "law of attraction" is the secret to health, wealth, and happiness. Our thoughts, claims Byrne, create reality. We need simply master the "law of attraction" to draw whatever we want into our lives.

In addition to the concept that human beings create their own reality with their thoughts, The Secret clearly presents monistic pantheism (all is one, all is divine). This is, in fact, an underlying theme of the book. Since, according to The Secret, all is one and all is energy, Byrne comes to the typical pantheistic conclusion: "You are God in a physical body... You are a cosmic being... You are the creator..." (page 164; see also pages 155, 156, 159, 160 and 162). Earlier Byrne writes, "We are all connected, and we are all part of the One Energy Field, or the One Supreme Mind, or the One Consciousness, or the One Creative Source...we are all One" (page 162).

Monistic pantheism is a seriously flawed worldview that leaves no room for personality, can supply no viable distinctions between good and evil, and excludes the transcendent, personal God of Christian theism. If all is one, then there are no longer distinctions between good and evil. As a result, pantheism can offer no secure framework for universal moral values. In addition, The Secret claims the law of attraction is merely an impersonal force of the universe. If all is one, one is all, and all is energy, there is no room for personality within the belief system of The Secret. The concept of the law of attraction results in the conclusion that everything that happens in one's life is the result of our thoughts creating reality. According to the principles of The Secret, this means that those who are, for instance, raped, molested, beaten, or brutally murdered— whether adults or children— have brought all these things on themselves through their own thoughts. This is hardly a satisfactory answer to the problem of human suffering.

Although some of the concepts presented in The Secret are admirable, such as the emphasis on expressing gratitude (page 74 and following), the core concepts of the law of attraction, that everything is energy, and that all is one are inadequate explanations of reality. For instance, while The Secret repeatedly emphasizes the value and importance of love and feelings in general (pages 30-33), these are concepts that make no sense within a pantheistic worldview. According to The Secret, the law of attraction is "impartial and impersonal" (page 27). Despite the impersonal underpinnings of the worldview of The Secret, Byrne wants it both ways— an impersonal universe that is somehow also personal. Communication requires personality. If our thoughts really do transmit on certain frequencies, as The Secret repeatedly claims, and these thoughts directly communicate with the universe, then something must be personal. However, the worldview of The Secret cannot support personality, much less personal interactions, without inherently contradicting its views that all is energy and the law of attraction is impersonal.

Christianity, claims Byrne, also knows "the secret." The Secret even quotes the King James Version of
Mark 11:24 as an example of how to use the law of attraction (page 47-54). This biblical passage reads, "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." By quoting these words of Jesus, Byrne is suggesting that Jesus knew "the secret." But did he? Hardly. Byrne is committing not only an error in interpretation of the biblical text, but also a worldview error. Jesus was a Jew and, consequently, a theist. The passage must be interpreted in context, realizing that first century Jews believed in a personal, loving, transcendent God who created the universe. This is diametrically opposed to the worldview of The Secret which claims that "god" is all, impersonal, and part of the universe. Moreover, the passage cited from Mark is about prayer to a personal, loving God. It is not a law of attraction or formula to get what we want. Rather, prayer is personal and must be within God's will in order to be answered.

Christ did not teach that we are all divine energy beings capable of mastering the law of attraction. Instead, he taught that we are all sinners in need of radical redemption that involves humbling ourselves before the one awesome, transcendent, and holy God. Far from promising perfect health and wealth, Jesus called his followers to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow him
(Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23). His followers did not promote "the secret." Instead, they were martyred for their belief that Christ was God in the flesh who came, died, and was resurrected so that we might have eternal life. Jesus and His followers did not teach hidden truths or secrets. Jesus himself said,

"I have spoken openly to the world...I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret"
(John 18:20 NIV).

In Matthew 16:26, Jesus said,
"What does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life?" (NET).
The Secret is all about acquiring health and wealth— feeling good, being joyful in life, and manipulating "the law of attraction" in order to get what we want. But as Christ pointed out, life is not about gaining "the whole world." What is at stake is our eternal destiny. The pantheism of The Secret and Christian theism cannot both be true. Since pantheism is an inconsistent, deficient worldview, it falls far short of being a robust belief system. Christianity, on the other hand, makes sense of reality in a way that is both emotionally satisfying and intellectually rigorous. The true "secret" is no secret at all, but is revealed openly in the pages of the Bible. God came to us in human form, died for our sins, and was bodily resurrected so that we would humble ourselves before him and receive his gift of salvation. That gift is not mere temporal health and wealth, but eternal life in a relationship with the Creator of the universe."

A Course in Miracles (ACIM)

Most Christians believe that Jesus works miracles on behalf of His children in response to answered prayer. But are there counterfeit teachers teaching about what their Jesus does? If you see the problem here you will answer yes.

Marianne Williamson has "A Course in Miracles." See if you can spot her New Age teaching. Here is an excerpt from her book:
"In brief, A Course In Miracles teaches that all is love...According to the Course, love is all there is. And because God is love, God is therefore in everyone and everything. Because God is sinless, perfect, and "at one" with all creation, then we, as a part of God, are also sinless and perfect in our "oneness" with Him. Man’s only "sin" is not remembering his own perfect, sinless, divine nature..." (page 10). Marianne Williamson teaches A Course in Miracles daily on Oprah & Friends on XM Satellite Radio.

Some years ago a New Ager by the name of Warren Smith was a devoted student of "A Course in Miracles." But then a transformation took place in his life. Now he wonders if there is an attempt on Marianne Williamson's part to re-invent Jesus Christ. He discovered that the teachings of the Course- supposedly a "new revelation" channeled from "Jesus"- were diametrically opposed to the teachings of the true Jesus Christ of the Bible. He came to understand that the "Jesus" of A Course in Miracles was one of the false christs that the real Jesus warned His followers to watch out for.

Warren Smith wrote an article titled "Oprah and Friends to Teach Course on New Age Christ." In that article Smith presented significant concerns about Oprah & Friends teaching this New Age Course in Miracles. This article was published in the November 9, 2007, issue of Herescope.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, "Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many."
(Matthew 24:3-5)

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity

Eckhart Tolle

Here is a quote from Tolle's book "A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life's Purpose." See if you can spot a New Age teaching.

He writes on page 57, "you realize that your true identity in consciouness itself...The ultimate truth of who you are is...I Am."

Brought up near Cologne in Germany as Ulrich Tolle, he had a miserable childhood. "Even aged 10 or 11 I was trying to figure out ways I could commit suicide."

In his mid-30s he lost interest in school and became a traveler for two years, staying with friends or occasionally in a Buddhist monastery, or sitting on park benches. His family thought him "irresponsible, even insane." But then he started writing books.

Here is a quote from one of his book promoters:
"Eckhart's profound yet simple teachings have already helped countless people throughout the world find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of the teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that he sees as the next step in human evolution. An essential aspect of this awakening consists in transcending our ego-based state of consciousness. This is a prerequisite not only for personal happiness but also for the ending of violent conflict endemic on our planet.

Eckhart Tolle is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, The Power of Now, (translated into 33 languages) and the highly acclaimed follow-up, A New Earth, which are widely regarded as two of the most influential spiritual books of our time."
Quoted from the web. Web address is http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/mar/08030701.html

Tolle is not a true Christian- he is allegedly a Buddhist. He trained and studied under the Buddhists and he believes and teaches their doctrine. However, if Tolle labelled his teachings as Buddhism no one would buy them but labelling them as New Age they will buy them.

What are some of the Buddhist beliefs? The idea of sin or original sin has no place in Buddhism. Also, sin should not be equated to suffering. "Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful." Udana-Varga 5:18.

Some New Agers believe in the God Gene that you have inherited from your parents. There are three reasons why people believe in God and or attend services. Some carry genes for just 1, others 2, and a few, 3 reasons. If you inherited all three, you have the God Gene. And there are many other things contrary to God's Word that they believe.

The Bible says:
"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator- who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them"
(Romans 1:16-31) (NLT).

Here is an article titled "Oprah and Eckhart Do the New Age Shift" by Warren Smith

"Get ready to be awakened." – Oprah

"The twenty-first century will be the time of awakening, of meeting The Creator Within. Many beings will experience Oneness with God and with all of life. This will be the beginning of the golden age of the New Human, of which it has been written; the time of the universal human, which has been eloquently described by those with deep insight among you.

"There are many such people in the world now – teachers and messengers. Masters and visionaries – who are placing this vision before humankind and offering tools with which to create it. These messengers and visionaries are the heralds of a New Age."
– "God" [Neale Donald Walsch], Friendship With God

"...This book itself is a transformational device that has come out of the arising new consciousness. The ideas and concepts presented here may be important, but they are secondary. They are no more than signposts pointing toward an awakening. As you read a shift takes place within you."

"This book’s main purpose is not to add new information or beliefs to your mind or to try to convince you of anything, but to bring about a shift in consciousness, that is to say, to awaken...It will only change your state of consciousness or it will be meaningless. It can only awaken those who are ready. Not everyone is ready yet, but many are, and with each person who awakens, the momentum in the collective consciousness grows, and it becomes easier for others."
– Eckhart Tolle, The New Earth

"Don’t get attached to any one word. You can substitute "Christ" for presence, if that is more meaningful to you. Christ is your God-essence or the Self, as it is sometimes called in the East. The only difference between Christ and presence is that Christ refers to your indwelling divinity regardless of whether you are conscious of it or not, whereas presence means your awakened divinity or God-essence."
– Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

There are two things I have learned:
There is a God
And I'm not Him

The New Age paradigm "shift"
by Warren Smith

What is a paradigm? According to the dictionary it's "a set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline."

"I stared at the huge stack of books in the Barnes & Noble bookstore. The title of the book was "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life Purpose." The title sounded like a book by Purpose-Driven pastor Rick Warren, but it was actually the latest selection in Oprah’s Book Club. A colorful orange and blue paper band around the book invited the reader to "Join Oprah and Eckhart for a worldwide web event...Every Monday night beginning March 3, 2008 for 10 weeks...Register at Oprah.com/anewearth." A personal message from Oprah stated: "Get ready to be awakened."

It was clear to me that Oprah was no longer content to just popularize New Age beliefs, she would now teach them. This was a bold move by a woman who was obviously willing to do everything in her power – which is considerable – to convert the world to her New Age worldview.

The Shift

With friend and New Age author Marianne Williamson simultaneously teaching A Course in Miracles daily on Oprah & Friends XM Satellite Radio, Oprah now offers two very public New Age classes. These classes are teaching millions of people that the way to save themselves and the planet is not by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, but rather by accepting "the Christ within." For someone who probably has an aversion to traditional proselytizing, Oprah is giving new meaning to the word "proselytize" as she continues to push her New Age beliefs upon the world. But, in defense of her role as a New Age proselytizer, Oprah would probably be the first to tell you – it’s all for the good of the world. She would also probably argue that what she is teaching is not New Age, but a "New Spirituality." Curiously, that just happens to be the same term that some emerging church leaders like Brian McLaren are using as they introduce New Age ideas and language into the church.

Oprah can call her New Age teachings whatever she wants, but she and her ever-growing band of New Age colleagues are still teaching that "we are all one" because we are all "God" and “Christ." As Marianne Williamson writes, "We are all one, we are love itself. "Accepting the Christ" is merely a shift in self-perception."

The "shift" Williamson, Oprah and Tolle describe is "awakening" to the "Christ within" and the "God within." "Shift" is the key word. It means to move from one position to another – as in shifting one’s awareness away from the mind and "ego" to the collective "Christ consciousness" or "Christ within." And, as in shifting your belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to a New Age belief in the "Christ within." With her New Age classrooms on satellite radio, and now on the Internet, Oprah apparently feels an urgency to teach everyone how to "awaken" and make this "shift" to the "Christ" within. With her Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) kicking in next year we can expect to see her New Age views showcased on an even grander scale.

In her first class with Eckhart Tolle, Oprah asked if people had experienced the "shift" while reading Tolle’s book, A New Earth. The question reminded me of Werner Erhard’s New Age EST program in the 1970s that taught this same idea of shifting one’s perception, and then similarly asking – "Did you get IT?" Obviously, there is pressure to "get IT" – to feel the shift: Oprah felt the shift – did you? Are you understanding this new [age] way of looking at yourself and the world? Or, are you being blocked by your mind and your ego from seeing this New Spirituality that can save our planet? Keep logging onto our classes. Keep reading Tolle’s book – you’ll "get it."

Years earlier, when launching the New Age movement publicly with her book, The Aquarian Conspiracy, Marilyn Ferguson introduced this concept of the "shift," connecting it to the mystical ideas of Teilhard de Chardin – the father of the New Age movement – "whose new perspective would trigger a critical contagion of change" which would result in the "rapid transformation of the human species, beginning with a vanguard" of emerging leaders. She explained how scientist-philosopher Thomas Kuhn coined the term "paradigm shift" to describe "a distinctly new way of thinking" which entailed accepting new truths. When "the new paradigm gains ascendance" and "a critical number of thinkers has accepted the new idea, a collective paradigm shift has occurred." Ferguson said the "shift" would result in a "new knowing" of the occult world called an "awakening" of "deep inner shifts."

Evolve or Die

Tolle’s book A New Earth – like A Course in Miracles and other New Age teachings – exploits the idea that the world is at a crisis point and insists that we must "spiritually evolve" as a species to avoid personal and planetary disaster. According to New Age leaders like Tolle, spiritually evolving means "shifting" or converting to the heretical belief that we are all "God" and that we are all "Christ."

In both his book and his class with Oprah, Tolle reiterated the words that New Age leader Barbara Marx Hubbard was given by her New Age “Christ” – "evolve or die." In other words, don’t feel any pressure, but if you don’t "shift" your point of view, and "get it" that "we are all one" and that "we are all God," our planet will probably be destroyed and our human species will become extinct.

Tolle and Oprah stayed away from the harsher aspects of this "evolve or die" dictate in that first Internet class. Hubbard, however, has made it clear that in the future, those who refuse to make the "shift" by seeing themselves as "God" will be eliminated by something called "the selection process." Hubbard, who is highly respected by her New Age colleagues, claims that her "Christ" has laid out an Armageddon alternative peace plan to save the planet. This peace plan is predicated on accepting the "shift" in consciousness that Oprah and Tolle (and other New Age leaders) are teaching – the "shift" to the Christ within.

Hubbard’s New Age view of the future inspired her to be one of the co-founders of the World Future Society and she is currently listed as a member of its Global Advisory Council. Emergent leader at the "vanguard" of church "transformation," Brian McLaren, has also written about an Armageddon alternative and just happens to be one of the featured speakers at the upcoming World Future Society’s annual gathering.

Surprised by the Truth

In describing their New Age/New Spirituality "shift" and the necessity for everyone to spiritually evolve, Eckhart Tolle erroneously states that once you "awaken" to your Christ-consciousness and your own godhood, the shift is "irreversible." What he neglects to take into account is that there are large numbers of us who formerly made the “shift” to these New Age beliefs only to discover – by the grace of God – that we had been greatly deceived by these New Age teachings. The Bible proved itself to be true as it exposed the New Age/New Spirituality for what it was – a lie. It was very humbling for us to realize that the Bible was true after all, and our New Age beliefs were wrong. God was God and we were not. Jesus was the one and only Christ. There was no universal "Christ-consciousness" or "Christ within." We were amazed to discover that there really was a deceptive spirit world and an actual devil; that we really were sinners that needed to be saved by Jesus Christ. What we came to understand was that the whole New Age plan to save the world was part of the very deception that Jesus warned would come at the time of the end (Matthew Chapter 24). We were stunned by the truth of the Bible and shocked at our own gullibility to have believed that we were “God” and "Christ." We had been very sincere about our New Age beliefs, but we were sincerely wrong – as are Oprah and Tolle.

The New Age paradigm "shift" is a deceptive device that is being cleverly used by a very real spiritual Adversary who is out to deceive the world. One of the definitions of "shift" in Webster’s Dictionary is "a deceitful scheme or method; a trick." The New Age/New Spirituality “shift” advocated by Oprah and Tolle is such a "shift." It is, in every sense of the word, diabolically "shifty."

Observations from Oprah's Message Board

I went to Oprah's website- her message board section. Why? I wanted to read what other Christians had to say about her public broadcasts regarding New Age doctrine. Here are a dozen quotes from a dozen folks who placed a message there. I think what they had to say speaks to the problems at hand.

1. "It's so nice of you and the other "righteous protectors of the faith" to join us once again with your defense of Jesus...who strangely enough, is never actually in need of your defense."

2. "God is not a God of confusion, but a God of order. To confuse and frustrate people so, by saying there are different ways to Him, wouldn't be very loving. Why stir up so much trouble for His creation? What I would like to know is this- how can people completely trust this "Truth" (that is- that "there are many ways to God")? Isn't this belief a "faith" in itself? They certainly can't prove it- so it has to be "faith." And if it is faith, who or what are they trusting? Something they heard or read their own selves? I want to know. I want to know what or who they base their "Truth" on. Also what if their source is lying or deceived or crazy? Would they stake their lives on this belief? And why is one way to God so offensive? If God is sovereign (and He is), then isn't He the One to say how to have a relationship with Him? Also here is another question- if all ways to God are okay, then shouldn't those who believe this be respectful of each and every way? Just some thoughts going through my mind. Peace and joy..."

3. "Jesus said it. If He was wrong, He was a liar, a manipulator and the founder of the largest cult the world has seen. If He's right, then many are certainly being deceived, as He clearly warned would happen."

4. "Jesus did judge- in fact, at all times that Jesus encountered someone in sin, He called them out on it. The woman at the well- He condemed her adultry, to the woman who was to be stoned for adultry- He told her to go and stop sinning; at the temple- He turned over the tables and told the money changers that they were polluting His Father's house. I could go on with many other examples. Do not confuse the verse that speaks on not judging others as an excuse to allow others to live in sin or use the Word of God in error. Within the Bible we are also told many times to lovingly confront a "brother" who is in sin to turn them back to the way they should go. Jesus did judge actions, but He always loved the person and He always forgave when they were repentant. We are not to think of ourselves as better than another, but what kind of friend would I be if I saw someone headed in a bad direction and did nothing to stop it lest I be accused of being ‘judgemental‘?"

5. "...understand, that there are many contradictions in A New Earth (ANE) when compared to scripture. You may be able to discern the truth, but many might not know enough scripture to do the same."

6. "Oprah is really into some weird stuff lately and now this is the end for me. I am not going to watch her any more. I have enough to be concerned about and when someone this powerful makes me question the only thing in my life that brings me real joy and peace, then I am going to run. Her reputation is on the line and I hope people are not so desperate that they abandon their own belief in God over "New Age" and "Spirituality." The Old and New Testaments warn us not the be taken in. I pray for all who are reading this that you hold strong to your FAITH and resist being lured away from the God that created us all."

7. "I have been taken back by much of what I have seen lately. I have been upset, and I have been urging people to pray for Oprah. I don't fully understand why she has chosen the path she has, but as we know, "We fight not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and wickedness in high places." What I am praying is that Oprah's eyes are opened, and she begins to understand that she has been deceived. I do believe that she really believes she is helping people. I will say this, one day when I was praying, I felt God told me to pray for Oprah. He told me something specific. What is amazing is that I knew nothing of A New Earth, yet. And I had not been paying attention to the fact that she endorsed A Course In Miracles (ACIM). And even if I knew, it has only been recently that I knew what ACIM teaches. I understand you choosing not to watch her show anymore, but I would ask you to earnestly pray for her. She has been loved for so many years, and remember the story in the Bible of the lost sheep...He left the 99 to go after the one. Right now, look at Oprah as that one. Thank God that He never gave up on us, and we are not to give up on others."

8. "Tolle goes on to explain what Christ actually meant- that just really bothered me. I also have a problem with the "I AM" because we are created by God, but God is the only "I AM." We can't take one more breath without Him. It is arrogant of us to think we can. I read this the other day- it is from a book called
"I Am Not- But I know I AM" by Louie Giglio...
"God is unchanging, constant, unending...
God was telling Moses,
I Am the center of everything
I AM running the Universe
I AM the same every day
I AM the owner of...
I Am the Lord
I AM the creator and sustainer of life
I Am the Savior
I AM more than enough
I AM inexhaustible and immeasurable
I AM GOD."
Moses knew, "I am not the center, I am not in control, I am not the solution, I am not all powerful, I am not calling the shots, I am not the owner of anything, I am not the Lord, I am not running anything, I am not the head of anything, I am not in charge of anything, I am not the Maker, I am not the Savior, I am not holding it all together, I am not all-knowing...I am NOT God
(Exodus 3:15). If one disagrees with this, than one must ask, "How did I come into the world, and How will I leave?"

9. "...there is one thing I do know, after seeing the web classes and the terrible lies in Eckhart Tolle's books, and having had the benefit of someone who is teaching what the truth is, how to recognize it, and what the lies are in these books, I feel no fear of any kind. I know who is being deceived and by whom. I know what false lesson is going to be given tomorrow. And how it will have to be spooned out, to seem truthful to all of you. It is a serious thing, to take people's souls, and deceive them with lies. And to promote them as truth about God. The lack of ability to discern these false teachings, is a sorry thing to witness. And to see Oprah Winfrey, as a spiritual leader, when she is the exact opposite, is a terrible thing. The lessons will end, and the collective think tank will probably go on, but I have read the end of the story and know what is coming soon. That is something Eckhart Tolle did not want to discuss- the future. For he will surely answer for what he has done, and, unfortunatley, so will anyone, who chooses to believe him, and who turns their back on the Creator of the Universe and His Son."

10. "Is Tolle your Savior? Will he die for you sins? Do you believe Tolle or JESUS?"

11. "I am sad to know that so many people are being led to believe this crock of bull- there is only one truth and way and that is Jesus Christ our lord and savior. If you want to awaken try readintg The HOLY BIBLE. I am not here to bash or tell you that you are crazy. I'm just here to say I will pray for you all that you will find the truth...Tammy"

12. "The bible teaches you must be "born again," and "believe." The original greek text means "to trust, rely on and adhere to." You have to trust and rely on Jesus, not yourself- not on "love." You are right, Jesus is not super-human. He is God. And He requires we worship Him, depend on Him, and accept Him as the one true God. This a matter of our eternal security. It is a gift by God's grace. It is by the merit of Jesus Christ's shed blood, and not on the basis of human merit or works. The teachings of Eckhart Tolle are not the teachings found in scripture. And the "logic" used in "The New Earth" is scripture twisting."

"How can God do His work in people who seem to think that
Christianity is just another way of getting things from God?"
- A.W. Tozer

Original Sin

Tolle's teachings about original sin have confused a lot of folks. Remember, Tolle is allegedly a Buddhist and not a Christian so what he believes about original sin may be different from your understanding of original sin.

Here are some examples of this confusion from Oprah's message board:

1. "Many Christians out there are exemplifying their ugly sides. They should stop being dense and start opening their minds wider. By reading this kind of book, it doesn't mean we are straying away from our religious beliefs..."

2. "I think giving up the ego is a pretty big repentance. About Christianity - people tell me that Jesus died for my sins and all I have to do is believe and he will accept me into heaven? Well, I would rather walk in his path (I don't mean the Passion) and live what he taught. I don't really think it's fair to Jesus to say, hey, thanks man, now I can sin all I want and as long as I repent and accept you as "my lord and savior" I'm gonna skate right in. Again if giving up the ego is not repentance of the Original Sin, then I just don't know what is."

3. "I don't think that EGO was the original sin, but I do believe that ego was the immediate result of original sin. "Is Ego the Original Sin?" This is a great question and I was wondering if the ego and its compulsions are what was intended by the term "original sin." I don't know that much about Christian theology but it seems to fit the bill."

Well, let's take a look at Christian theology and see what "Original Sin" is.
Original sin is a term used to describe the effect of Adam's sin on his descendants
(Romans 5:12-23). Specifically, it is our inheritance of a sinful nature from Adam. The sinful nature originated with Adam and is passed down from parent to child. We are by nature children of wrath
(Ephesians 2:3).

Original sin is a Christian teaching. It is not a Buddhist teaching. Buddhists do not believe in original sin. The confusion comes about by Tolle, a Buddhist, applying a Christian term to a New Age application. One of Satan's favorite tricks is to twist what God says to cause confusion. Confusion is of the devil.
"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints"
(1 Corinthians 14:33).

Sometimes the majority only means that
all the fools are on the same side

Conclusion

Is pride going to bring Oprah down?

In the late 1960's the singing group, The Beatles, full of pride, enjoyed all of their fame and popularity. I liked many of their songs. Then they changed. They started using drugs, got into Eastern Mysticism, and made the claim publically that they were more popular than Jesus Christ. Many of their songs touted rebellion against the Lord. This was the beginning of their downfall and it was all downhill from then on. Is this the beginning of the end for Oprah?

In the Bible, King Nebuchadnezzar was warned by God not to get too prideful. If he got too prideful God would have to humble him. But he continued on his self destructive course and got too prideful. When that happened God humbled him.

Here is the story from the Bible:
"Your Majesty, the Most High God gave sovereignty, majesty, glory, and honor to your predecessor, Nebuchadnezzar. He made him so great that people of all races and nations and languages trembled before him in fear. He killed those he wanted to kill and spared those he wanted to spare. He honored those he wanted to honor and disgraced those he wanted to disgrace. But when his heart and mind were hardened with pride, he was brought down from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. He was driven from human society. He was given the mind of an animal, and he lived among the wild donkeys. He ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God rules the kingdoms of the world and appoints anyone he desires to rule over them."
(Daniel 5:18-21)

Is Oprah this prideful? I don't know, but let's take a look at what Jesus said:
"...but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
(John 3:17b-21).

"These people are false apostles. They have fooled you by disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. But I am not surprised! Even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder his servants can also do it by pretending to be godly ministers. In the end they will get every bit of punishment their wicked deeds deserve."
(2 Corinthians 11:13-15)

Satan's tries to deceive as many folks as he can. Don't be one of them.

Satan has a lot of counterfeits. Don't fall for one of them.

There's a lot of voices out there. Only listen to the voice of Jesus.
"After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they recognize his voice. They won't follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don't recognize his voice"
(John 10:4-5).

Satan always has something coming down the track trying to deceive people. If one thing don't work, then he will try something else.

Satan has used his people to spawn the lie of biological evolution. Unfortunately, it has been taught in many of America's universities as fact and has deceived many. I believed it for a time until I got saved. Speaking from experience, there is no permanent inner peace to be found anywhere in the philosophical camp of the Humanists.

When I was in Junior College in 1965 I remember that Theothanatology or the Death of God was a big current topic. I remember that this seemed to impact some folks at the time.

Then there was the free sex and free drug sub-culture of the late 1960's. A lot of their transcendental meditation (TM) and Eastern Mysticism was advertised around. Many sold their souls or damaged their minds during this time. Many of these folks now don't think the price they paid back then was worth it.

Then there was the rise of Witchcraft and Satanism. Some folks wandered down this trail in search of power and pleasure.

Then the New Age Philosophy was touted as the saviour of mankind. Many souls bowed down to this false idol.

There have been other counterfeit trains that have come down the tracks promising everything that the Bible has to offer. In essence, you can have it all if you just bite on the lure. But unknown to you, the lure has a hook in it. Satan is fishing for your soul every minute of every day. He has a lot of angles to play and a lot of lures to cast out.

I think I have just about seen and heard it all.

What's my advice to you? Accept Jesus Christ as your only Saviour at the first opportunity. Throw away all of your other false idols- literal or philosophical ones. Study your bible every day. Guard your mind carefully- you have the helmet of salvation that will help protect you in this area. Be careful what you watch at the movies, what you watch on television, what kind of music you listen to, and what kind of material that you read. Go to an Assemblies of God Church or any good evangelical Christian church that preaches and teaches the uncompromising truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Don't let anyone or anything interfere with your love for the Lord and your commitment to serving Him.
