David Cook Pix Bible Comics

Back in the 1960's or so, David C. Cook Publishing Ministries printed the weekly Bible Sunday Pix comic style Sunday School lessons. I just loved those comics then and wondered if they were still available for use today. I emailed the company. Well, guess what! David C. Cook Publishing put all of these comics together in one book and now sell it as The Picture Bible. I am an old man now and wondered if I would enjoy reading this Bible after it arrived in the mail. Well, guess what! My wife bought me one for my birthday and I just love it.

Now, I don't get any money for helping them sell these "Bibles." It's just a love service on my part because I am a literature evangelist and happen to love their product. I want you to be blessed too and that is why I am sharing this with you. At the bottom of this page I give you a link to click on to go to their website where you can order one or more of these "Bibles" online if you want to so you can have one for yourself and be blessed.

Men is Asia love to read comics. I challenge the good folks who work at David C. Cook Publications Ministries to translate their Picture Bible into the Asian languages for missionary outreach. The way that I understand it now, the Picture Bible is only available in the English and Spanish languages.

Here is their description of their Picture Bible:

"For years, The Picture Bible has delighted young and old. Now updated with interesting new features, including "Did you know?" fact pages, time line, story listing, maps, and more, kids will love the great stories and action pictures of the newly revised Picture Bible. God's Word will come alive for hours of family reading enjoyment.

Newly designed with a fresh cover, text, and maps, this Scripture makes an ideal first Bible for young readers. Though the full text for 233 stories is provided, children can follow the colorful pictures and storyline without having to read every word. A perennial best-seller, The Picture Bible is loved by young and old, and has proved to be an excellent way to improve children's reading skills."

Do I have any free samples of their work to share with you? Yes. I will share with you one true Bible story out of the Old Testament and one true Bible story out of the New Testament. Just keep in mind that their work is copyrighted and not to be sold.

What's the history of those Pix Bible comics?

To answer that question, here is what their website has to say as shared with us by Ralph Gates, Director of Cook Communications Ministries International in May 2001:
"Sunday PIX" [USA] - First published in 1949 as a comic strip/book-style addition to the David C. Cook Sunday School curriculum (Vol. 11, No. 44, November 1, 1959, shown here) - Still in print today - Features Biblical stories, stories of missionaries, and "heroes of the Christian faith" - Title changed to "Bible-in-Life Pix" in 1969, and to just "PIX" in the 1990s - Various writers & artists - Contained all new material until the 1960s - 12 pages average, including paper self-cover, but issues vary between 8-16 pages of comics and illustrated text features - Full colour throughout - PIX is said to have had the longest issue run of any American comic book, and any Christian comic book, with almost 3000 weekly issues since its beginning. However a number issues from the 1990s (and since) have actually contained very few comics pages, so it is debatable whether these later issues could actually be called "comic books"- "Over 65 million PIX, used in the curriculum, have been distributed."

Here is the true story of the birth of Jesus Christ in the New Testament:

Here is what their website states about their hardcover Picture Bible:
"Though The Picture Bible makes a good first Bible for young readers, this classic perennial best-seller is loved by people of all ages. The full-text version contains 233 Bible stories in full-color comic format."
