Some Names and Titles of Jesus Christ

The Eternality of Jesus Christ means that Christ is eternal- He does not have a beginning
or an ending. Certain names and titles prove His deity because only God is eternal. Jesus Christ existed in
times past, He exists now, and He will always exist in the future. That means that Jesus
Christ was pre-existent. The definition of pre-existence means that He existed before
His birth. One evidence for Christ's pre-existence is proved by His titles.
Do you know the meaning of your name? My first name is Kraig. This name is derived from the
root word "crag." The crag of a rock is strong and enduring, hence my name means
strong and enduring. Sometimes a name can describe the essence of your being and
sometimes it does not. And if humans have this much trouble with names, then how can one
name fully describe the essence and character of God? Can the names and titles of Jesus
Christ prove that He is God and that He is eternal? Just what is God's name? The
scriptures shed some light on this subject.
Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to
them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is
His name? what shall I say to them?" And God said to Moses,
God did give the Jewish people, later on, another name by which He is known. But the
Jewish scribes thought His name to be so holy that they refused to write it down completely.
Rather, they only wrote four letters down from the spelling of His name. In the English
language these letters are known as the tetragrammaton. These letters are
JHVH or YHWH. From these letters are derived the words: Jehovah or Yahweh in the English
language.
The name of God the Father is very awesome and if we struggle so greatly with His name then
it only stands to reason that we may also struggle with the name of God the Son. God has
to come down to our level to help us understand Him and without His help we cannot adequately
do it.
Was the name of Jesus a random or arbitrary happening? No. Here is what the scriptures declare:
"I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel,
I AM has sent me to you."
Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel:
The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of
Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all
generations"
(Exodus 3:13-15).
"...And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save
His people from their sins."
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through
the prophet, saying:
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His
name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
(Matthew 1:21-23).
Four Main Titles of Jesus Christ
Let's take a look at four of the predominant titles of Jesus Christ. Why? Because the titles
(and names) of Jesus Christ help prove the fact that He is eternal. And since He is eternal
He is also God. Here are those four titles:
1. The Son of God
2. The Son of Man
3. The Messiah
4. The Prophet
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. This is a divine title.
If you love the Lord you are a "son or daughter of God" by adoption
"While he spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out
of the cloud, which said,
‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him‘"
(Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5). This is NOT the same title for the Son of God. Why? Because
the Bible reveals only "One begotten of the
Father" as the spiritual Son who possessed the complete nature, attributes, power
and authority of God. This One is and always will be Jesus Christ. Have you got a scripture
or two on that? Yes, here it is:
"When Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples,
"Who are the people saying I am?"
"Well," they replied, "some say John the Baptist; some, Elijah; some, Jeremiah or one of the other prophets." Then he asked them,
"Who do you think I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "The Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
"God has blessed you, Simon, son of Jonah," Jesus said, "for my Father in heaven has personally revealed this to you- this is not from any human source"
(Matthew 16:13-17).
(Matthew 17:5).
You might ask the question: the Jesus title "Son of Man" does not sound like a divine title to me. Why did
He call Himself that? Well, there is a certain mystery of the incarnation that we will
never understand. What we do know is that it was His will to be born as a human baby,
grow to manhood, and to be fully identified with humanity. Therefore, He was fully God
and fully man at the same time. He is called by many as the God-Man.
It was necessary for Him to experience thirst, pain, pleasure, hunger, rejection, poverty,
death, love, and other such things. Why? Because He had to fully identify with humanity. He is not a God Who is way out in
space somewhere who does not understand or identify with each of us as His creation.
Rather, He is an intimate Savior Who fully understands you and knows what you are going
through. He loves you and fully appreciates you for who you are because you are His
creation. If you love Him
This divine title of Jesus Christ is used of Him in all four of the gospels. Here are a
few of those scriptures:
And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head"
"But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"- then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house..."
"When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes"
"The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is justified by her children"
"For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath"
"Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come"
"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth"
"And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again"
"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels"
"Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man's sake..."
"Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect"
"No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven"
It is comforting to have a Savior who understands, isn't it!
When did Jesus become the "Son of Man"? This event
is called the incarnation and it was prophesied to happen:
"Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel"
"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"
Jesus is the Passover Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. What does that mean?
That means that Jesus had to shed His blood for the remission of our sins. In the Old
Testament days before the cross a spotless lamb was slain and it's blood used in a
symbolic way for the remission of sins. But this was only a "type" until the
real and genuine showed up. What happened then? Then the genuine showed up. Jesus was the sinless
"Son of Man" Who shed His blood to take away your sins and my sins. Is there
any scripture on that? Yes, take a look:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life"
"And that is the way it was with us before Christ came. We were slaves to Jewish
laws and rituals, for we thought they could save us. But when the right time came, the
time God decided on, He sent His Son, born of a woman, born as a Jew, to buy freedom
for us who were slaves to the law so that He could adopt us as His very own sons. And
because we are His sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, so now we
can rightly speak of God as our dear Father. Now we are no longer slaves but God's
own sons. And since we are His sons, everything He has belongs to us, for that is the
way God planned it"
"Because God's children are human beings- made of flesh and blood- Jesus also
became flesh and blood by being born in human form. For only as a human being could
He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the Devil, who had the power of
death. Only in this way could He deliver those who have lived all their lives as
slaves to the fear of dying. We all know that Jesus came to help the descendants
of Abraham, not to help the angels. Therefore, it was necessary for Jesus to be in
every respect like us, His brothers and sisters, so that He could be our merciful and
faithful High Priest before God. He then could offer a sacrifice that would take away
the sins of the people. Since He Himself has gone through suffering and temptation,
He is able to help us when we are being tempted"
you are a real prize to Him.

(Hebrews 2:14-18).
The word "Messiah" is a Jewish title. The Jews understood that their Messiah would be
divine, so therefore, it is a divine title. The word "Christ" is also a Jewish title
with the same meaning.
Is Jesus Christ the Jewish Messiah? Is Jesus the Jewish Christ? The answer to both
questions is yes. Why do you say that? Well, let's take a look at some of the scriptures:
"Now when John (the Baptist) had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent
two of his disciples, And said unto Him, "Art thou He that should come, or do we look
for another?" Jesus answered and said unto them,
"Go and show John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive
their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are
raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever
shall not be offended in Me"
"When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, saying,
"Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?"
And they said, "Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others,
Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He saith unto them,
"But whom say ye that I am?"
And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living
God." And Jesus answered and said unto him,
"Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto
thee, but my Father which is in heaven"
"Philip now went off to look for Nathanael and told him, "We have found the
Messiah!- the very person Moses and the prophets told about! His name is Jesus, the
son of Joseph from Nazareth!"
"The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things." Jesus said to her,
"I who speak to you am He"
Did Jesus ever make Himself equal with God? Yes. Why? Because He is God. Do you have any
scriptures to prove your point? Yes. Take a look at a couple:
Jesus answered, "The truth is, I existed before Abraham was even born"
"The Father and I are one."
Once again the Jewish leaders picked up stones to kill Him. Jesus said,
"At my Father's direction I have done many things to help the people. For which one
of these good deeds are you killing Me?"
They replied, "Not for any good work, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man,
have made yourself God"
One time I was witnessing on a college campus. I witnessed to a male Jewish student there.
I told him that Jesus Christ was his Messiah and he flew into a rage and denied that. I
shared a few scriptures with him but he rejected the whole notion and then left. I met
another male Jewish student there who had a different story to share with me. He said that
he accepted Jesus Christ into his heart and that now Jesus was his Messiah. His parents
warned him about this commitment but he continued to follow Jesus. He told me that he
attended his own funeral. His parents put a casket into the ground and told everyone that
their son was considered dead by them. From then on he was rejected by his own family.
You will never know how proud I was of that man. He had the love, the intelligence, the bravery,
the integrity, and the commitment that the early Jewish Christians had to persevere
for Christ in spite of their horrible persecution.
(Matthew 11: 2-6).
(Matthew 16:13-17).
(John 1:45).
(John 4:25-26).
(John 8:58).
(John 10:30-33).
The title "Prophet" is a divine title used by Moses to help identify their Messiah.
Here is what Moses had to say:
The Christian martyr, Stephen, gave testimony that the Prophet was Jesus Christ:
The Apostle John said the same thing:
"A great fear swept the crowd, and they exclaimed with praises to God,
"A mighty Prophet has risen among us," and, "We have seen the hand of
God at work today"
Since Jesus was the Prophet, did He ever prophesy anything?
Yes, among other things, He prophesied His own death, burial, and resurrection:
He also foretold the destruction of Jerusalem (that took place in 70 A.D.)
And Jesus foretold many other things that are not written here.
"The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your
brethren. Him you shall hear..."
"I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put
My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him..."
(Deuteronomy 18:15, 18).
"This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, The Lord your God will raise up
for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear..."
(Acts 7:37).
"When the people realized what a great miracle had happened, they exclaimed,
"Surely, He is the Prophet we have been expecting!"
(John 6:14).
(Luke 7:16).
"And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by
the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again"
(Mark 8:31).
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!"
(Matthew 23:37). And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down"
(Matthew 24:2).
And there are more titles of Jesus Christ that are not listed here.
(Isaiah 9:6 RSV)
(Revelation 1:5 MKJV)
From the beginning of the world to its end, there is no place you can look and not see Jesus.
One Christian author did a wonderful job in listing more of His names and titles:
but has the power to do something about them).
(helping us make sense of life and live it successfully).
Everlasting Father, and more. (In short, He's everything we need).
and the One who assures us that our dry, dead bones will come alive again.
(who never runs out of time).
if we have abandoned Him).
He is everywhere.
He is everything.
